Assuming you mean the letterbox status on LBNA, the status is only available for the owner of the box. They may have received a report or two where someone could not find it and they decided the reporting boxer(s) were somewhat reliable sources and the owner hasn't had a chance to go look for themselves. So they may temporarily marked it as unknown.
Another possibility is the box may not have been found in a long time (or ever) and again the owner hasn't had time or an opportunity to go check on it.

One reason that an owner might list a box's status as Unknown might be if they've received very believable reports from seekers who were unable to find the box, and gave every indication that they were looking in exactly the right place, but the placer has not yet had a chance to go themselves and confirm that it's 100% definitely missing.

What if they only live three miles from their box? Would there be another reason for placing an unknown status on it??? I guess I should have been more specific with my original question, but it was very early in the morning when I posted it. :-)

Distance doesn't always play into whether a person can go and check on a
box. Life does at times get in the way of our obsession.
